There are so many opportunities – Home based businesses, on-line businesses, Multi Level Marketing (MLM), paid to work programs – the list goes on and on.  One question you have to ask yourself is, Is this opportunity I am researching real?

Many of us consider these types of opportunities at some point in our life and spend lots of time and energy researching their claims and wonder if we have the ability and desire to achieve those types of results.

When researching and learning about these opportunities and what they offer there is a process that you should go through.  This process is called Doing Your Due Diligence.

By completing your Due Diligence you will ensure that you cover all aspects of the business to make to an informed decision if it has the fit for your desired outcome.

I have put together a basic due diligence list below to prompt some research topics;

You have to ask yourself how much time do I actually have to commit to this business.

Will my family be supportive of my desire and efforts in setting up and running this business.

Does the offer seem too good to be true?

Is the product of interest to you?  Could you give it credibility when promoting it?

How much does it cost to join and are you aware of all the ongoing costs?  This is one point that can be very deceiving as a lot of businesses are not upfront with their costs.

Is there a preferred level that you need to consider positioning yourself on entering the business?

Have a full understanding of the Compensation package you are being offered.

Do you have a quiet, clean, organised work area with access to reliable computer, internet & phone connection.

Research independent websites for any publicised reviews of the companies or businesses.

Search the company’s registered name, trading name, address, ABN and directors if listed with the appropriate regulated Government bodies eg ATO, Scamwatch, Dept Fair Trading, etc.

Are you willing to learn and expand your skills base.

Does my current household insurance cover me to run a homebased business?

Most people are very money focussed when looking at business opportunities and this can distort your judgement, there is some business opportunities there provide a great monetary reward and help you grow as a person eg the Personal Development Industry.

When running your business, you have to be very disciplined to work efficiently from home.  As there can be many distractions, have set office hours and inform your friends and family of these hours when you will be at work.

The transition period from either stay at home mum or full-time employee to setting up a home based business can be daunting however if you find the right fit and follow your passion and desire to succeed to be at the top of your league.  There are countless success stories that have been written to read.

Once you have worked through the Due Diligence list, you are now in a position to make your decision.  You will find that your decision should be aligned with your values and goals.
